The Legend of the Mermaid Tears Mermaid Tears gets its name from the story of the mermaid's tears- the precursor to other contemporary mermaid stories: Legend tells us of mythical womanly sea-creatures that longed for company under the ocean. Although the mermaids had the power of the sea, they were forbidden to use it and interfere with the human world. They would swim next to ships or sing from atop rocks, drawing the ships to crash and the sailors to drown, assuring a mate for a lonely mermaid. One particular mermaid fell in love with a Captian whose ship she had swum with many a crossing. One night a terrible storm had the ship tossing about. The Captain lost his footing at the wheel and was cast forward to the edge of the ship, barely missing the raging sea. The other mermaids would have relished in the Captain's drowning and company for all eternity, but the love-sick mermaid would rather see her True Love alive and in his own world. At once, the mermaid calmed the waters saving the life of her Captain. As punishment for interfering with Nature, King Neptune banished the weeping mermaid to the bottom of the ocean for all eternity. The heart-broken mermaid never saw her beloved Captain again, nor was she ever allowed to the surface to swim with ships or play with ocean creatures. Her act of selflessness had earned her an eternity of woe. Her tears wash up on the shore as Beach Glass, called Mermaid Tears, a symbol of unrequited love. Our History Mermaid Tears was started in 1998 by Melisa Schmieder to distribute her hand-made crafts ranging from ceramics to soaps to jewelry. The line started incorporating scrapbooking products when friends had Melisa make customized paper dolls to match people's weddings, prom, etc. She had custom dies made of these dolls to keep up with demand. As Melisa used her left over jewelry making items in her scrapbooks and altered art pieces people inquired as to where they could purchase some. The line expanded to what it is today. Mermaid Tears continues to grow drawing on talented designers as inspiration for new products. They have a group of in-house designers and consultants as well as a rotating Design Team. They are always looking for new eclectic items to add to our line and designers that can embrace our style. Mermaid Tears takes pride in using high quality elements in making their line.
